“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” 1 Peter 2:9 (NRSV)
You are worth more than the Old Pope’s Old Ford Escort!
In Oct. of 2005 , Houston Attorney John O’Quinn, a Baptist, paid $690,000.00 for Pope John Paul’s 1975 Ford Escort. Mr. O’ Quinn said that he wanted to place this vehicle in a museum that he is building in his hometown. Think about it! Here you have a car that is 30 years old and on any used car lot would not even bring $1,000.00. Why then did Mr. O’Quinn pay $690,000.00 for it? He paid the astronomical amount because of its previous owner, the Pope. You might think that you as a person are not worth much. You might think that you are just an old 1975 Ford Escort. Now listen up, you are worth more than a 1975 Ford Escort. You are worth more than a brand new Hummer, Cadillac or Mercedes put together. Why? You, like the 1975 Ford Escort were auctioned off to the Highest Bidder. The highest bidder was God. The price was His Son. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16. No wonder God’s word says that you are the apple of His eye.” Psalm 17:8
Thought: The worth of our lives comes not in what we do or who we are but by WHOSE we are! Thought: Some days we feel like a Model-T but God’s love makes us feel like we are a powerful race car in NASCAR!
One more thought. In October of 2006, Ernest Cannon, an attorney friend of mine asked to use my office because his Attorney friend, John O’ Quinn was flying into Stephenville on his private jet. He said, that John was in the news and that they needed to have a private meeting over some legal issues that John was going through. He did not want the news people to know where he was so my office in Stephenville would be a great place. My attorney friend and John O’Quinn and another well-known Attorney, W. Mark Lanier came to my office. I told them that I was leaving and asked if there was anything that I could do for them. John, said pastor, “I would like for you to do two things. Please get me a cup of coffee and pray for me. He said,” I really need your prayers”. He told me that he had accepted Christ as his personal Savior and attended the 2nd Baptist Church in Houston. I got the coffee and prayed with John and then left. On October 29, 2009 John O’ Quinn died in a downtown car accident. The news said that John had left a Warehouse full of rare and valuable automobiles. The Law Center of the University of Houston plus the Stadium is named after John O’ Quinn. Here is the amazing truth, the most important thing that John did or was privileged to do was to be born in the family of God through trusting Christ as His Personal Savior.
