God’s Imprint on Your Life

Jerusalem said, ‘The Lord has left me.  The Lord has forgotten me.’

God answers, “Can a woman forget the baby she nurses?  Can she feel no kindness for the child she gave birth to?  Even if she could forget her children, I will not forget you.  See, I have written your name on my hand.” Isaiah 49:14-16.

In 1981, I went to visit my parents, who at that time were living in Daly City, California.  It was a discouraging time because I had realized that my mother did not remember who I was.  She had forgotten that I was her best looking and most intelligent child.  It was during this visit that I learned that my mother was in the early stages of Alzheimer’s.  Four years later, she would go on to live in a nursing home in Fort Worth, until her death in 1991.  She would never call me by my name nor remember who I was.  On the day she died, I was there holding her hand as she drew her last breath.  It was during that time that I realized that even though my mother could forget who I was, God could not.  Why?  He has tattooed His name on my hand.

Rabbi Kushner goes a step further, when he reminds us that our task as humans is to find the holiness of God in the trying times of life.  Look for the beauty of God in every situation.  We can learn to find God even in ugly circumstances.

Richard Carlson wrote a book titled, “Remember that Everything Has God’s Fingerprints on It.” In that book he says, “…just because we can’t see the beauty of God in every situation doesn’t suggest that He is not there.” In other words, in this new year of 2023 look at the Big Picture in your life.  God is there.  His print is on your hand.
